《我的父亲母亲》

Ok, so we recently watched a movie (in Chinese Class) called "《我的父亲母亲》". We were given the opportunity to get extra credit if we wrote the review on it, so here's mine... enjoy ;)

《我的父亲母亲》
THE ROAD HOME

1. Please list two of the food items mentioned in the movie (in Chinese pinyin or characters)
I believe that two of the foods mentioned were
1) Mi (rice), and
2) Pidan (Preserved Egg).

2. The English/Chinese names/titles of this movie are different. In Chinese it is 《我的父亲母亲》, in English THE ROAD HOME. Which one is better, why?
I believe that “《我的父亲母亲》” is the better title for it. Although THE ROAD HOME is the theme that is woven throughout, 《我的父亲母亲》 is directly related to the main event thought it all. 《我的父亲母亲》 explains the person watching the movie that it (the movie) will be based on the “speaker’s” mothers relationship with his father.

3. Which scene(s) impressed/touched you the most? And why?
I thought that the most impressive “scene” wasn’t just one—it was the theme through the whole movie. It was the fact that the girl was going after the guy—especially since in those days/ in their culture it was supposed to either be an arranged marriage or the guy would pursue the girl.

4. What have you learned from the movie about Chinese women’s social status in the 1950s and 1960s in China?
They were considered inferior to the males in that culture. While the guys would be doing all the working, the women were expected to stay home, clean, and help cook meals for the community of hard workingmen.

5. Please list three or more new things you have learned about China by watching this movie
1) Women were still inferior to men in the 1950/1960’s.
2) Women were not allowed to be “directly around” while the men were eating their meals.
3) Many Asians use various accents, which made it hard to catch all that they were saying…

6. Please ask two questions about this movie.
1) Why were women not allowed to “stick around” while men were eating their meals?
2) What else was going on in their country at this time?
3) Why did the “father” have to leave the school? Was he in political trouble?
